Script Contest 2012

@ComicWho #Contest

Introduction
This contest is designed to engage Comic Who readers and make them part of the creative process behind the realization of the strip. Participants will be asked to write the script of a strip that will be brought to the attention of an international jury. The best one will be turned into a real strip and published on the Comic Who blog page.

The Subject
Each year we will propose a different subject on which the participants must rely to carry out their script. The subject this year is Smithy!
Every script must use our Eleventh Doctor as the main character; you can also include Tenny, Eccly and any other Comic Who character you want, but Smithy must be the protagonist. You can create parodies of events which occurred in the TV series Doctor Who, but original stories will be much appreciated.

The Jury
The jury will be composed by the following people:
- Elisa Moriconi (Comic Who Illustrator)
- Chiara Cavalli (The artist who realized the main price)
- Francesco Spreafico (Doctor-Who.it webmaster)
- Lady Soliloque (Writer and Video Editor)
- Luke Williams (The Doctor Who Site webmaster)
- Michael David Key (Artist)
- Craig Hurle (Doctor Who and the Tardis by Craig Hurle administrator)

Contest Rules
- The contest will begin at 0:00 AM (GMT) on March 1, 2012 and will end at 11:59 PM (GMT) on March 31, 2012.
- Scripts must be uploaded through the automatic submit page at this link.
- All scripts sent outside of the validity period of the contest will be ignored.
- All scripts must be written in proper English (no slang will be accepted).
- It will be accepted only one script per person.
- The Comic Who staff will answer with an email by communicating the acceptance of the script or the reasons for which have been refused.
- Winners will be announced on April 8, 2012.
The jury's decision is final!

Script Rules
- No obscenity and/or vulgarity and/or violence will be accepted.
- Every script must be divided into 4 (four) vignettes.
- You have to describe all the backgroungs as you are describing a picture.
- You have to describe exactly the laying and the facial expression of each character in the vignette.
- No more than 4 (four) characters are allowed into a single vignette.
- No more then 3 (three) balloons are allowed into a single vignette.
- No more then 30 (thirty) words are allowed into a single vignette (this includes onomatopoeia). Example: if you have two ballons into a vignette, you can write 15 words in the first one, 14 in the secont and use 1 onomatopoeia.

Tips & Tricks
- Strips are like puns, should make people laugh by saying a few things, basing mainly on the expressions and comic absurdities.
- Don't waste time creating complex stories, usually a simple situation is much more fun. Sometimes you do not even need words to make people laugh (think of the Valentine's Day spcial).
- Too many characters and dialogues are often synonymous with confusion and risk of boring the reader. Try to be as concise as possible.
- Remember that vignettes provide a limited space, so do not overdo the details, otherwise you may not have enough space available for carrying out the scene.
- Read this Facebook Note to understand how to create a script.
- If you have doubts or concerns, please send an email to comicwho@gmail.com. The Comic Who staff will answer soon as possible.

Contest Winner Award & Prizes
- The winning story will be drawn by Elisa Moriconi (the Comic Who Illustrator) and published on our comic blog (with all the credits to the original author).
- The winner will receive a figurine of Smithy made in Polymer Clay (The one you can see on the flyer).
- The second place will win a Commission of a digital color illustration of a single character on white backgroung realized by Elisa Moriconi.
- The third place will win a Commission of a pencil sketch of a single character on simple backgroung realized by Elisa Moriconi.

The Fan Choice Award
After the contest scripts of stories that are classified by the # 2 to # 10 will also be published as Notes on the Comic Who Facebook Fanpage. The public will choose the best by putting the "like" on the favorite script.
- The vote will take place from April 8, 2012 to April 14, 2012.
- The winning story will be drawn by Elisa Moriconi (the Comic Who Illustrator) and published on our comic blog.
- The author will win a Commission of a digital color illustration of a single character on white backgroung realized by Elisa Moriconi.

@ComicWho
It's always a great laugh on the Comic Who set, but sometimes our little friends exceed the limits and for the poor Simmy this means troubles! This is what happened while shooting "The Sound of Drums"

Comic Who Confidential - An Ordinary Working Day

@ComicWho
It's time for a new Confidential, this time we want to share with you the complex process leading to the creation of a strip from the script. It consists in several important steps and in most cases it can be summarized as follows...

February 2011

February it's my month and the next strip I'm going to show you was published on my birthday. We're still joking with regenerations and this time we took in consideration the most tearful! When the 10th Doctor regenerated, a lot of people started to ask for him to come back! But it's just like a game, you have to go on and let the new player to take your role:

The idea was simple, they are kids, and what kids do when they have to leave their games? You've just read the result ^_^

The next one was our first special strip, it was Valentine's Day, so we choose to talk about love. One of the most loved companions, even by the Doctor, was Rose Tyler, but this time the idea didn't came from Doctor Who, but from "Diary of a Call Girl" where Matt Smith (formerly known as the 11th Doctor) did a cameo and had a very hot scene with Billie Piper (alias known as Rose Tyler). What if Eccly and Tenny caught Smithy with Rose?

February 16 is the Christopher Eccleston's birthday, so we wanted to celebrate that day in Comic Who style, but it wasn't Monday, so we choosed to dedicate him an illustration, a sort of PinUp as a gift for this amazing Doctor. Elisa tried a new way to color it and I must say it's very good:

This was also our first appearence on the comic. The guy on Eccly's left is me and the girl on the right is my beautiful girlfriend!

During the past months we bought the ticket of the Doctor Who Experience. It was an amazing trip and we decided to dedicate a strip to the event:

If you have been there you'll notice that the posters are directly taken from the experience (they are real pictures taken during the visit) and the texts in the first panel are taken from the original website... this particular strip was also posted on the Doctor Who Official Tumblr blog (I'm wondering why :P).
We loved the Experience and we also did a review of the event that you can find here with pictures and opinions.

It was a month full of new stuff and we also introduced a new [quite] regular character! The Doctor can't live without his greatest enemy: The Master! Actually we leave every companion with their real name (Rose, Jack, Amy, etc...) but we were planning to use more than one Master, so we choosed to call him Simmy (from John Simm, the actor who plays the role in the third series)

I think this one doesn't need any kind of explanation, so I just greet you and we'll see you tomorrow with a new month full of strips!

January 2011 - The Beginning

We want to celebrate the new year with you all, but we also want to celebrate the birthday of this blog! On January 14 our web comic will grow older and we want to retrace its first year with our followers! Expect one post every day until the 14th with a little surprise in the end!

As you may know, we're from Italy. Our country is not one of that blessed with real time Doctor Who episodes. From the 2005 to the 2007, a satellite broadcaster translated the first three seasons of the new series, so we had the honour to know Eccleston and Tennant, but then the channel went out of business and the Doctor didn't materialize with his TARDIS anymore in our tellies (well, internet is a big place to find what are you searching for). In the end of 2010, a TV trailer began to be transmitted on one of our national channels (Rai 4): the Doctor was travelling again through time and space with Donna Noble as his new companion... well, the trailer was about series 4, but actually they were planning a full rerun of all the series starting on January 14, 2011 (they broadcasted 5 series and all the Christmas special until 2010 and the sixth series is scheduled to start on January 12).

This is the story so far of a dream of a couple of whovian who began their journey in the Doctor Who world! This is the story of how Comic Who was born!

Everything started from a joke, we were planning to watch the first episode with Eccleston and we wondered what would happen if the 10th and 11th Doctorwere going to be there with us watching the first adventure of the 9th... my girlfriend, during the day published on her blog the following two strips:

The first strip is about us watching the episode. In the third panel you can find us with our friends and animals (and a Dalek)... the musical notes are actually the original notes of the Doctor Who theme tune. The translation of the last panel is:

"Shhh... He is coming!"
"What do you mean by 'Who'?... The Doctor! Join us"

In the second image we can see the very first appearence of Tenny and Smithy and the translation of the text is:

"Us! We're going to join!"
"There is still room for us?"
"This way please"

When I saw these, I started to think of a thousand of adventure of this tiny Doctors and Elisa loved my ideas, so we decided to open a blog (in English, this time) where to publish our new strips working together as a team! I write the stories and she draw them!
But the first one, which is actually the last part of the previous two strips, was completely her idea and, let me say, it's pure genius:

We decided to schedule a new strip every Monday featuring all the three Doctors as three distinct character named Eccly (9th), Tenny (10th) and Smithy (11th) so, after a few days, we published our very first strip. We wanted it to be very childish, our Doctors are kids, so we wanted to introduce them (at least Smithy) playing a game... a very dangerous game:

It was a great success... well, at that time we didn't expect so many visits, actually we reach that amount of visits every hour, but for an unknown italian couple for the first time in the Doctor Who universe was an amazing moment. We received a lot of comments and a lot of appreciation! And this is what came next:

We introduced for the first time all the three Doctors and we faced our first "problem": the 9th and 10th Doctor shared the same Sonic Screwdriver in the TV series, but we needed to show them with three different Screwdrivers... the idea came from "Silence in the Library" where River Song used to have a different Screwdriver, a red one, so we decided to give it to Tenny and asked our followers to get the reference.

Things were going well for our comic, so we choose to get more into the TV series taking fool of the most tearjerker moments of the story... the moment of the Doctor's regeneration. The next strip I'm going to show you is actually the most loved and the most viewed of our first year:

We also introduced for the first time a companion (Rose), and the TARDIS... our first month ended with a lot of new regular followers and a lot of appreciation comments... we were tiny, but we were growing fast!

See you tomorrow for a new part of our history!

Christmas Special

Back in the 70's Simmy is going to celebrate Christmas alone with baby Yana! But you know, at Christmas time miracles do happen and sometime even foes become friends!

Simmy's going to leave the 70's, but I promise, next year we'll have more Classic Who. This is our last strip for 2011 and it's also the last strip for our first year... We're getting older; January 14, 2011 we start this wonderful journey and now, with 2000 followers on Facebook, 1000 followers on Tumblr and more then 300 regular followers on Blogger, we are going to celebrate our birthday with you all! Prepare yourself, because celebrations will start on New Year's day!

Merry Christmas to you and your families from the Comic Who Staff!

Bad Bad Beans

Did you have fun on Halloween? Let see how our little heroes have spent their evening. They surely had fun, they surely had sweets (Eccly and Smithy greased a couple of pounds), but they also were scared... by beans.

Happy Birthday Doctor Smith

On The Train

It's a Comic Who Monday... well, we are no more regular as the beginning, but sometimes we are able to deliver a new strip on Monday and this is the case.
This time we found our little friends in a great danger, an epic battle is taking place on a train, but you know, this is Comic Who and you don't have to believe to the appearances!

The Rescue - Teaser

Hi guys,
this time we want to introduce you a new project! A big project (at least bigger on the inside)!
We are going out of the box... literally, we want to make a real comic, not a simple strip... well, it'll half a strip and half a comic! It's to early to talk about this stuff, but it's growing and it's becoming real!

You know, we're crazy, we're mad, and we want to meet a mad man with a box, so here is the idea: Comic Who is going to cross over the Doctor Who universe in an epic comicbook! It will be funny, very funny, very very funny ^_^

I'm actually writing the story (the greatest story never told ^_^)  and I can count on two great artist for the realization of this comic. The Comic Who universe and our tiny doctors will be drawn by the well known Elisa Moriconi, while the Doctor Who universe and its mad characters will be drawn by Jessica Palumbo

We made a little teaser for you and we really hope you like it and you will enjoy our new project. We will give you more information and we'll show you something more precise as soon as the project evolves.
